Westminster’s Hannah Dintino had never scored a goal as big as the one that dethroned defending state champion Dulaney on Monday.

The sophomore midfielder scored just 31 seconds into overtime on an assist from Anna Ruby to give the No. 11 Owls a 13-12 victory for the Class 4A-3A North Section I championship.

“Me and Anna are both sophomores on the team and we always work together on offense,” Dintino said. “We make amazing eye contact in the 8 [-meter arc], so when she looked at me and she passed me the ball, everyone on this team knew that was it and that was going to be the final play.”

Westminster (14-2) will host Section II champion Bel Air for the regional championship Wednesday. The regional winner will advance to the state semifinals Friday or Saturday.

The Owls, who have never won a state championship, had to fight off a huge Dulaney surge in the second half when the Lions’ Maggie Kelly helped them win the first 10 draws. That — and three straight extra-man goals, including two from Kelly, who finished with four — sparked visiting Dulaney from an 8-5 halftime deficit to a 12-10 lead on Charlotte Lipstein’s goal with 5:19 left.

“Dulaney’s a great team and it was goal after goal,” Westminster coach Jackie Stevens said. “It was taking a timeout, just re-evaluating what we needed to do, but draw control was important — communication and working as a team, just being smart with the ball.”

Caroline Frock and Anna Ruby, who each scored four times, erased Dulaney’s lead with back-to-back goals to tie at 12 with 1:39 to go. The Owls took two shots at winning in regulation but Lions goalie Hannah Slomkowski stopped both.

There wasn’t much Slomkowski could do against the game-winner.

While Dintino scored the crucial goal, Frock’s draw control was the key to the big finish — after Dulaney had won 11 of 12 in the second half.

The Baltimore County champion Lions (12-5) are the second 2016 state champion to fall early this spring. Three-time Class 2A-1A champion and No. 10-ranked Manchester Valley, which moved up to 3A-2A, fell in the sectional semifinals to No. 4 Marriotts Ridge.
