Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., has accused the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives of altering a job title to evade a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives issued by President Donald Trump.
Trump signed several executive orders on Inauguration Day, including one which directed all federal government DEI offices to close. The order specifically called out the Biden administration for its involvement in pushing DEI initiatives in the federal government.
“The Biden Administration forced illegal and immoral discrimination programs, going by the name ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI), into virtually all aspects of the Federal Government, in areas ranging from airline safety to the military,” the order reads. “That ends today. Americans deserve a government committed to serving every person with equal dignity and respect, and to expending precious taxpayer resources only on making America great.”
Burlison raised concerns about ATF Chief Diversity Officer Lisa Boykin, whose job title recently changed to “senior executive” without explanation.
“The ATF defied @realDonaldTrump’s order to place DEI workers on leave, instead giving their DEI officer a new title,” he wrote via X. “They attack citizens’ rights, ignore leadership, and act as though they’re above the law. Enough is enough. Time to abolish the ATF!”
The agency did not respond to a request for comment about the title change.
Burlison also proposed a bill this month to abolish the ATF, claiming the agency presents a threat to Americans’ right to bear firearms. Also backing that measure was Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.
“The ATF is emblematic of the deep-state bureaucracy that believes it can infringe on constitutional liberties without consequence,” Burlison said. “If this agency cannot uphold its duty to serve the people within the framework of the Constitution, it has no place in our government.”
NASA on Thursday announced it would shutter its DEI programs in the wake of Trump’s order. An internal email asked employees to report violations of the order by those who seek to “obscure” a connection to DEI:
“We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language. There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However, failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences.”
