Maryland women’s basketball overcame an early deficit to get past Green Bay, 68-59, on Friday in the second of three games at the Cancun Challenge.

After trailing early, the Terps carried a one-point lead into the third quarter thanks to a third-quarter buzzer-beater from freshman Riley Nelson. Early fourth-quarter points from Shyanne Sellers and Bri McDaniel helped Maryland (3-3) pull away from the Phoenix (3-2) of the Horizon League.

McDaniel was a sparkplug off the bench for the Terps all afternoon, finishing with a career-high 19 points, including an 11-for-12 performance at the free throw line. Sellers recorded 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists while shooting 7-for-19 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line.

Nelson was also huge off the bench, finishing with a career-high nine points. Maryland finished with a 30-20 advantage in bench points.

The Terps also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Phoenix 57-33 and securing 16 offensive rebounds. Jakia Brown Turner finished with a game-high and career-high 13 boards.

In a reversal from Thursday’s loss to No. 23 Washington State, Maryland clawed back from an early deficit, outscoring Green Bay 18-13 in the second quarter to pull within one, 30-29, at halftime. Maryland finished the third quarter on a 6-2 run, highlighted by a jumper at the buzzer by Nelson to take the lead for the first time, 45-44.

The Terps, who won their 53rd consecutive game when leading with five minutes left in regulation, finished 25 of 29 from the free throw line but struggled from 3-point range, shooting 1-for-11 from deep.
