Former Maryland star Shyanne Sellers was drafted 17th overall by the Golden State Valkyries in the second round of the 2025 WNBA draft.

“It’s special to be here, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” said Sellers, wiping away tears on ESPN after being selected.

Sellers eclipsed 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in her Maryland career, making her the only Terps player to accomplish the feat. She averaged more than 10 points per game in each of the past three seasons. Sellers scored 14.4 points per game and shot a career-best 40.8% from 3-point range this past season, leading the Terps to the Sweet 16.

At 6-foot-2, the athletic guard has the size and scoring ability that professional teams love at the guard position. She’s a gifted 3-point shooter, passer and rebounder, and her career mark of 83% from the free-throw line only adds to her efficiency as a scorer.

Sellers battled through a knee injury during the late stages of the 2024-25 season, finishing the season while playing in a knee brace.

Her health might’ve been the only reason she wasn’t selected in the opening round.

“I think injury history is always a part of the conversation for coaches and GMs,” ESPN’s Andraya Carter told The Baltimore Sun earlier this week. “Just obviously, it’s a grueling WNBA season, because you’re coming in as a rookie, you’re playing against grown women, and you’re playing back to backs, and you’re playing multiple games in a week, and there really isn’t much time to even prepare for the season.”

Sellers is the 23rd Maryland player to have been drafted into the WNBA, including the 17th under coach Brenda Frese. Nine of Frese’s former Terps were selected in the top 10, the most recent being Diamond Miller, who was taken second overall in 2023.

Sellers will now join a new WNBA franchise, as 2025 will be the first season of the Valkyries’ existence in the league. She’ll join Chloe Bibby, who spent two seasons with the Terps, on the roster.

Sellers’ first WNBA game will come on May 16 at home against the Los Angeles Sparks.
