John Kelly (Calvert Hall) scored the game-winner with four seconds left to give the No. 12 Ohio State men's lacrosse team an 8-7 win over host Furman in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

The Paladins had tied the game at 7 on a goal with 33 seconds left. Furman won the ensuing faceoff, but Colin Chell (Boys' Latin) forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to give the Buckeyes possession.

After a timeout, junior transfer Austin Shanks found Kelly, and his bounce shot made its way into the cage.

No. 8 North Carolina 20, Michigan 10: Chris Cloutier scored five goals to lead the host Tar Heels (1-0) past the Wolverines (0-1).

State men

Salisbury 12, Hampden-Sydney 7: The Sea Gulls (1-0) began their quest for an 11th NCAA Division III championship with a victory over the Tigers (0-1) in Richmond, Va.

Salisbury opened the first quarter with a 5-0 run. James Buron finished with two goals and two assists for the Sea Gulls.

No. 8 Florida 15, No. 12 Loyola Maryland 6: Mollie Stevens scored five goals, and the host Gators (1-0) were too much for the Greyhounds (0-1).

Nation women

No. 2 North Carolina 11, James Madison 7: Molly Hendrick had four goals and an assist to lead the visiting Tar Heels (1-0) past the Dukes (0-1).

No. 9 Notre Dame 18, Jacksonville State 5: The Fighting Irish (1-0), led by Cortney Fortunato with four goals and four assists, cruised past the host Dolphins (0-1).

Notre Dame outshot Jacksonville 40-13.

No. 16 Louisville 14, Marquette 6: Cortnee Daley, Julia Wood and Jillian Balog scored three goals each to carry the host Cardinals (1-0) past the Golden Eagles (0-1).
