COLLEGE PARK — Maryland defensive back Denzel Conyers is “stable and alert” after he suffered an undisclosed injury during practice Thursday morning, the team announced Thursday afternoon. He was carted off the field before he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

“To be cautious, he's getting further testing done,” a team spokesman wrote in a statement.

The injury occurred in the early part of practice shortly after the team had finished stretching and going through warmups. Conyers was placed on a stretcher and carted to the entrance of the practice field, where an ambulance arrived shortly afterward to transport him.

Thursday's practice was open to the media, but the field was cleared after Conyers' injury. Coach DJ Durkin and selected players were scheduled to have media availability in the afternoon, but it was canceled and practice was subsequently closed.

Durkin and players are scheduled to speak with reporters after today's practice, along with Saturday morning's scrimmage, which is open to the public.

Conyers was working at safety with the second-team defense for the first part of fall camp. In the spring, he worked alongside defensive back Josh Woods (McDonogh) at safety with the first team, and the duo had earned praise from Durkin.

“They're getting a lot of the reps,” Durkin said in March. “They're doing good with them. They're learning a new scheme as well. I like those guys, their demeanor to things in practice. They're wanting to learn and get better, and they're always coming around asking questions. That's good. They'll continue to grow and improve and get better. They have the physical ability to do what we need them to do. Now it's just getting them to learn how they use that ability.”

Conyers is a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., who appeared in nine games last season, finishing with 15 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and three pass breakups.

He made his Maryland debut against South Florida in the third game of the season and was credited with a career-high eight tackles against Indiana on Nov. 21.

Conyers originally signed a letter of intent to go to Florida International coming out of Boca Ciega High in the Class of 2012. But he never took the field with the Golden Panthers and landed at Butte College in Oroville, Calif.

He committed to Maryland in the spring of 2014, but he was ineligible to play for the Terps that fall, which delayed his Maryland debut until last September.

At 6 feet 3 and 212 pounds, Conyers is one of the bigger members of Maryland's secondary. After injuries depleted the Terps linebackers this past fall, Conyers slid down and played a hybrid of safety and linebacker late in the season to provide the unit a boost.

In Maryland's loss to Wisconsin on Nov. 7, Conyers made his first career sack and almost had a pick-six.

Maryland's top two safeties in Durkin's defense appear to be Woods and sophomore Darnell Savage Jr.

Though Conyers has experience and size, Maryland has a large crop of defensive backs in camp with 20 on the roster, including four true freshmen from February's recruiting class.
