SARASOTA, Fla. — The Orioles didn't lose Thursday, but they didn't end their winless streak, either.

The team rallied from a three-run deficit late in the game but ended up settling for a 4-4 tie at Ed Smith Stadium — the same score by which it tied its Grapefruit League opener in Orlando nine days earlier. The Orioles lost nine straight games in between.

It looked like that streak would reach 10 after the New York Yankees carried a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning, but the Orioles took advantage of two errors to score three unearned runs.

Rule 5 draft pick Joey Rickard led off the inning with a single, Paul Janish reached on a two-out error by Jorge Mateo and Alfredo Marte singled to load the bases. That set the stage for Hyun Soo Kim to finally get his first hit of the spring. It wasn't artistic, but he beat out a bouncer to deep short to drive home a run and end his 0-for-23 exhibition hit drought. Steve Tolleson singled sharply to left-center to tie the game.

The inning ended on a long fly ball by Christian Walker that nearly cut all the way through the stiff wind that was blowing in from left field. But the ball was caught by minor league prospect Tyler Austin up against the fence to rob Walker of a three-run homer that likely would have ended the Orioles' losing streak.

Kim reached base twice in four plate appearances. He also was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.

Starting pitcher Tyler Wilson allowed hits to the first three batters he faced and gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but settled down after that flurry to retire eight of the next 10 batters.

The Orioles travel to Tampa today to face the Yankees again. Right-hander Mike Wright will take the mound for the Orioles, and Masahiro Tanaka will start for the Yankees.

Jones goes deep: Adam Jones got the Orioles offense started with a one-out home run in the first inning for his first extra-base hit of the Grapefruit League exhibition season. Jones came into the game with two singles in his first 12 at-bats.

Beating the shift: The Yankees used an exaggerated defensive shift against the Orioles' left-handed hitters in the first inning and almost regretted it.

Chris Davis slapped a bouncer down the third base line and Matt Wieters dropped a bunt on that side of the infield to put runners at first and second before Yankees catcher Carlos Corporan surprised Davis with a perfect pickoff throw to end the inning.
