The week between Christmas and New Year’s can be a tough one. The kids are off from school and finding things to occupy them is the challenge. Ice skating at one of two outdoor county rinks can be one option for hours of fun.

The rink at Quiet Waters Park is open Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 1 to 9 p.m. all other days, except Christmas, during school holidays. A two-hour session is $5-$6, with admission to the park waived after 5:30 p.m. Skates, helmets and walkers are available for rent. Cash or check only. For more information, go to facebook.com/qwicerink or call 410-222-1711.

Glen Burnie Ice Skating Rink, at 103 Crain Highway at the Town Center complex, is open daily until 9 or 10 a.m. Sessions are $7-$8, with skates, helmets and walkers available for rent. For information, go to glenburnieiceskating.com or call 410-590-5990.

Indoor ice skating is also available at the Naval Academy Brigade Sports Complex near Annapolis, usnabsd.com, and the Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Russet, piney.frontline-connect.com.

Skating not your thing? Here are a couple other options for enjoying the week:

There’s still time to see Lights On The Bay as a fundraiser for the Anne Arundel County SPCA from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Jan. 1.

Admission is $15 per car, $30 for large passenger vans, minibuses and trolleys; and $50 for buses. 3D glasses are available for purchase at the gate to Sandy Point State Park to make the already magical light show come alive. For information, visit lightsonthebay.org .

This is the final year John and June Sturgeon, 836 Turf Valley Drive in Pasadena, will host their annual train show display. The Sturgeons opened his train collection to the public in 1995. You can get one last look through Dec. 27. They ask that visitors park on Hunt Ridge Road and walk to the house. Look for flashing RR crossing sign in the backyard.
