Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., slammed Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., after her nomination for ambassador to the United Nations was pulled.
President Donald Trump on Thursday wrote via Truth Social that he had asked Stefanik to remain in Congress, despite having nominated her to represent the United States on the international stage. He cited Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House and concerns a Democrat could win election to fill her vacant seat.
“With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat,” the president wrote. “The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day.”
Trump has not said who he will nominate to the U.N. position.
Stefanik said on “Hannity” Thursday that “I have been proud to be a team player. The president knows that.”
“He and I had multiple conversations today, and we are committed to delivering results on behalf of the American people. And as always, I’m committed to delivering results on behalf of my constituents,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez slammed her colleague and accused her of ruining New York healthcare in the process.
“Was Stefanik’s failed bid for UN Ambassador worth selling out upstate NY’s healthcare?” she wrote on X. “No. Is she worth re-electing after her ‘farewell’ tour? Also no. NY-21, you deserve so much better than someone who will gut your Medicaid & Medicare for their own career ambitions.”
The post comes as AOC continues to draw significant attention from Democrats weighing who to select as the party’s next leader. She and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are continuing to host a series of rallies across the country to raise support for their “fight oligarchy” movement.
“In just 5 events, we had over 86,000 join us to stand up to authoritarianism & oligarchy and stop any bill that slashes Medicaid to give billionaires even more tax breaks,” Sanders wrote via X.
Ocasio-Cortez also commented on the success of the movement, arguing it could indicate shift in party attitudes.
“At our first stop alone, half the crowd were brand new people not previously on any of list or contact. Many were first timers,” she wrote. “What is happening right now is different. We must use this moment to fight back and defend our democracy.”
