Orioles acquire Tarasco, setting up Maier affair
March 18, 2000: Unranked UCLA stuns Maryland, 105-70, in the second round of the NCAA men's basketball regionals in Minneapolis. Lonny Baxter scores 22 points and Juan Dixon, 16 for the No. 17 Terps, who finish 25-10.
March 13, 1996: The Orioles acquire outfielder Tony Tarasco from the Montreal Expos to serve as a defensive replacement in late innings. In the 1996 American League Championship Series, Tarasco has a fly ball to right swiped by 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reaching over the field from the stands at Yankee Stadium. The play, ruled a home run, turns the tide for New York.
March 17, 1985: Len Bias leads Maryland to a 64-59 victory over Navy in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament in Dayton, Ohio. Bias (20 points, eight rebounds) guards David Robinson in the second half and holds the Midshipmen's 6-foot-11 sophomore center scoreless for the final 12 minutes. Navy finishes 26-6; Maryland, which loses its next game, ends 25-12.
March 13, 1979: The Orioles announce that, for the first time, the clubhouse will be open to female reporters this season. Manager Earl Weaver's response: “The women should have to have a letter from their parents.”
March 19, 1964: The Colts defeat the NFL champion Chicago Bears, 20-9, in a basketball exhibition at the Civic Center. All-Pro guard Jim Parker scores four points for the winners and, to the crowd's delight, throws a crushing shoulder block on Bears defensive end Ed O'Bradovich as the latter drives to the basket.
March 19, 1959: Jockey Howard Grant, 19, rides six winners in eight races at Bowie, tying Maryland's all-time one-day victory mark.
March 13, 1954: The Orioles hit six home runs in a 14-7 exhibition victory over the minor league San Diego Padres in Yuma, Ariz. In the season to come, Baltimore's new team will muster just 52 homers.
March 17, 1949: The Bullets rout the Minneapolis Lakers, 101-67, in a Basketball Association of America game at the Coliseum. Walt Budko, Baltimore's 6-foot-5 center, holds 6-11 George Mikan, then the pro game's all-time scoring leader, to four field goals.

March 13, 1932: Ordell Braase, a Pro Bowl defensive end for the Colts and one of three players to take part in the team's first three NFL championships (1958, 1959 and 1968). The others? Johnny Unitas and Don Shinnick.
