WASHINGTON — Baltimore Rep. Elijah E. Cummings underwent heart surgery and is expected to remain in the hospital for several days, an aide said Thursday.

Cummings, who represents the state’s 7th Congressional District, was being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital after undergoing a transarterial aortic valve replacement. The procedure, which aides described as minimally invasive, is used to correct narrowing of the aortic valve. The surgery took place Wednesday.

“The congressman will remain in the hospital for a few days and will return to his normal schedule thereafter,” a statement from his office said.

A spokeswoman said the surgery had been scheduled. The House is scheduled to be in recess next week for the Memorial Day holiday.

Cummings, 66, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, was first elected to his seat in 1996. An attorney and former state lawmaker, Cummings has become an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and has called for a more aggressive investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian efforts to disrupt last year’s election.

The procedure repairs the valve without removing the old one, according to the American Heart Association. Similar to a stent placed in an artery, the procedure delivers a fully collapsible replacement valve through a catheter, according to the association’s website.
