Allen R. “Rick” Vornadore, a homebuilder and founder and president of Van Allen Homes, died of glioblastoma Sept. 7 at Gilchrist Center in Towson. The longtime Fallston resident was 70.

Allen Richard Vornadore, son of Kerry Vornadore, a Ryan Homes sales manager, and Ann Vornadore, a homemaker, was born and raised in Pittsburgh.

He was a graduate of South Hills Catholic High School, where he was a talented athlete and lettered in baseball, basketball and football.

Mr. Vornadore attended Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, on a football scholarship and was team captain.

While at Edinboro, he met fellow student and cheerleader Martha Tomaszewski, whom he married in 1976.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in 1976, he went to work for Ryan Homes, where he spent several decades as an area vice president in Ohio, Texas, and Maryland.

In 2004, he and his brother, Kerry Vornadore, established Duck Shores of North Carolina Builders, where he worked until founding Van Allen Homes with his two sons in 2010.

“He renovated homes in Canton and Federal Hill and built homes in Baltimore and Harford counties,” said James “Jay” Schmidt II, his son-in-law, of Owings Mills.

Diagnosed 14 months ago with the glioblastoma that eventually took his life, Mr. Vornadore continued working and had not retired, Mr. Schmidt said.

“He was generous, compassionate, hardworking, visionary, honest, kind, reliable, loyal, smart, funny, and a friend to all,” his daughter, Michelle Schmidt, of Owings Mills, wrote in a biographical profile of her father. “He loved to work.”

A Harford County nature lover and Humane Society supporter, Mr. Vornadore enjoyed taking long walks with his dogs.

“He loved a good cup of coffee and a great meal with his family,” Ms. Schmidt wrote. “He loved music and had a great sense of humor and appreciation for comedy, especially ‘Seinfeld.'”

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing Uno and hide-and-seek with them, and attending their sporting events, recitals and parties.

While Mr. Vornadore enjoyed watching all sports, he remained a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

An avid reader and crossword puzzle expert, he also enjoyed a good political discussion.

“He was known for being level-headed and giving great advice,” his daughter wrote. “He was humble, a role model — inherently good-natured and kind.”

Mr. Vornadore was a communicant of St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Fallston, where a Mass of Christian Burial was offered Sept. 12.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Vornadore is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Vornadore, of Phoenix, Baltimore County, and Philip Vornadore, of Fallston; his mother, Ann Vornadore, of Pittsburgh; his brother, Kerry Vornadore, of Fairfax County, Virginia; and six grandchildren.
