Saints hire Moore as new head coach

Kellen Moore, who oversaw the Super Bowl champion Eagles’ offense this season, has agreed to return to the site of his latest triumph as the next coach of the Saints. The 36-year-old Moore will join an organization that has been floundering since the retirement of quarterback Drew Brees and departure of Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton. The Saints haven’t made the playoffs since the 2020 season — the last of Brees’ career. The Saints announced their agreement with Moore on Tuesday. A standout college quarterback at Boise State, Moore had a six-year career as a practice squad or reserve QB. He moved into coaching in 2018. Moore will become the Saints’ second head coach since Payton briefly retired following the 2021 season. That was the first of what is now four straight seasons without a playoff berth. Payton’s former defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, took over, only to go 1825 during 2 1/2 seasons before being fired following a seven-game skid. Darren Rizzi, who was a special teams coordinator under both Payton and Allen, took over on an interim basis and went 3-5.

Kershaw, Dodgers agree to contract

Clayton Kershaw was back on the field with the Dodgers on Tuesday after the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner agreed to terms on a new contract for his 18th season with the franchise. ESPN reported that the deal, which is pending a physical, will guarantee the 36-year-old Kershaw somewhere between $5 million and $10 million in 2025. The left-hander played catch as the team went through a workout on the first day of spring training at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. Kershaw, a 10-time All-Star, is coming off an injury-interrupted 2024 season in which he made just seven starts, finishing with a 2-2 record, a 4.50 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 30 innings. He didn’t pitch in the playoffs for the Dodgers, who won the World Series for the second time in five years. Kershaw is 212-94 with a 2.50 ERA in 429 starts and three relief appearances in his career. He declined a $10 million player option in favor of free agency but said then he expected to remain with the Dodgers. The pitcher posted on Instagram back in November that he surgery on his foot and knee.

Shiffrin, Johnson team up for gold

Mikaela Shiffrin won a record-equaling 15th world championship medal and Breezy Johnson became double world champion on Tuesday when the pair took gold in the new team combined event. Shiffrin was third-fastest in the slalom at the Alpine skiing worlds in Austria, just over three hours after Johnson had clocked the fourth-best time in the downhill. Johnson stormed into the finish area and hugged longtime friend Shiffrin, above, after the team took the lead, with three slalom skiers still to come down. Their lead held as the Americans beat silver medalists Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. Stephanie Venier and Katharina Truppe of Austria took bronze. The gold was Shiffrin’s 15th career medal from world championships and she matches the record set in the 1930s by German skier Christl Cranz. It’s the second gold medal for Johnson, who won the downhill last Saturday, two months after she returned from a 14-month ban for violations of the “whereabout” anti-doping rules. The team combined event will make its debut at next year’s Olympics. —AP
