Mariners: DH Nelson Cruz hit his ninth career grand slam in the third inning and added a three-run homer in the eighth to lead the Mariners to a 14-5 victory over the Blue Jays on Saturday. It was the 20th multihomer game for Cruz, who has hit 25 home runs this season. His seven RBIs were one off the team record. 3B Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer and OF Nori Aoki had two RBIs and scored twice for the Mariners, who totaled a season-high 19 hits.
Giants: OF Mac Williamson homered in the fifth inning and hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th, lifting the Giants to their first victory since the All-Star break, 2-1 over the Yankees. The Giants were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 7-for-64 since the All-Star break, before Williamson's single.
Red Sox: OF Mookie Betts was out of Saturday's lineup after an MRI on his right knee revealed swelling and a buildup of fluid but no structural damage. Betts said he's been dealing with the issue the “last couple of days” and that he felt it Friday after throwing out Twins 2B Brian Dozier at second in the top of the fourth inning. Betts was removed for precautionary reasons before the fifth. He said treatment has mainly consisted of icing his knee in order to get the swelling down, and Red Sox manager John Farrell said “everything points to this being a short-term situation.”
Pirates: OF Gregory Polanco and 3B David Freese hit two-run singles during a five-run rally in the fifth and the Pirates beat the Phillies 7-4. Pirates rookie RHP Tyler Glasnow was removed from his second major-league start in the fourth inning with discomfort in his shoulder.
Diamondbacks: INF Chris Owings came off the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined by an inflamed arch in his left foot. INF Nick Ahmed was placed on the 15-day DL with a sore right hip.
Padres: OF prospect Jorge Ona has agreed to a minor-league contract with a $7 million signing bonus.
Extra innings: Phillies C Cameron Rupp left the game in the third inning after being struck on the left ear flap of his batting helmet by a pitch. Rupp was examined by doctors and found to have no concussion symptoms. ... White Sox ace Chris Sale was scratched from his start against the Tigers after he was involved in what the team said was a “non-physical clubhouse incident.” The White Sox declined to describe the incident but said it's “currently under further investigation by the club” and that Sale was sent home from the park.
