Good lord, we live in amazing times.
Baltimore faces something pretty grand: Heavily favored in a home playoff game Saturday night against the archrival Pittsburgh Steelers with — and this is perhaps only a modest exaggeration — a superhero at quarterback. Today, we are “Balti-Lamar” in honor of the incomparable Lamar Jackson who, if he isn’t Superman, surely is the next best thing (hailing from Florida and not Krypton). Explain his unearthly season chalking up more than 4,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards, an NFL record, otherwise.
Yes, we know the Ravens have come up well short of the Super Bowl before including last year’s 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. But there is something special about this team, its star-studded, all-pro lineup, its veteran coaching staff, its belief in itself. We’ve seen it in tight end Mark Andrews and his clutch late-season catches, in running back Derrick Henry’s bruising dominance, in multi-tool safety Kyle Hamilton’s smart play. But above all there is Jackson, the two-time Most Valuable Player clearly deserving of a third such honor.
No one knows what the future holds. That’s as true on the gridiron as it is in Congress or the Oval Office. But we are deeply grateful to the Ravens and their inspirational play and especially to a certain Number 8, the greatest dual-threat QB in history, who has brought honor to his team and his city. Even in these uncertain times, we can be certain of one thing: the Ravens are going to put on a show that is bound to grab the public’s attention. How fortunate we are that we will be able to tell future generations we witnessed first-hand such a team.
Let’s go, Ravens!
