Twins: Twins shortstop Carlos Correa passed concussion protocol and was reinstated from the 7-day injured list ahead of a three-game series against the Royals that begins Friday night. Correa collided with center fielder Byron Buxton in pursuit of a shallow fly ball on May 15 at Baltimore, forcing both players out of that game. Buxton was also placed on the 7-day injured list and into concussion protocol. Twins head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said Wednesday that Buxton was “a little bit behind” Correa in his recovery, with a previous concussion adding more caution to the process. Buxton has begun to take batting practice.

Guardians: Guardians pitcher Ben Lively will undergo Tommy John reconstruction surgery on his right elbow and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. The Guardians said before Friday night’s game at Detroit that Lively’s surgical date has not been set, but it will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. The right-hander is expected to miss 12-16 months. Lively — on the injured list since May 13 due to a strained right flexor tendon — sought a second opinion on his right elbow with Meister earlier this week.

Red Sox: Rafael Devers had a career-high eight RBIs, hitting a three-run homer in the sixth inning a grand slam in a 13-run eighth to lead the Red Sox over the Orioles 19-5 Friday in a day-night doubleheader opener. The Red Sox trailed 2-1 entering the sixth, when Ceddanne Rafaela hit an RBI single off Seranthony Domínguez (2-1), Jarren Duran had an RBI single against Gregory Soto and Devers followed with his fifth homer in 10 career at-bats against Soto. ... Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was removed in the fifth inning of Friday’s doubleheader opener against the Orioles because of right quadriceps rightness and hopes he doesn’t go on the injured list. “I felt my quad grab so I didn’t continue running to second base,” Bregman said after the Red Sox’s 19-5 win. “I stopped and came back to the bag so I wouldn’t make it any worse.” A two-time World Series winner who spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the Houston, Bregman signed a $120 million, three-year contract with Boston in February and is hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. “I knew I needed to come out and see the trainer,” Bregman said. “We’ll know a lot more tomorrow after sleeping and seeing how it presents in the morning. All of my strength is still there, which is good.”

Braves: Ronald Acuña Jr. was activated from the injured list and restored to the Braves’ lineup on Friday, almost one year after he tore his left ACL. The Braves announced the move before Friday night’s game against the Padres.

MLB: Left-handed reliever Jake Diekman is retiring after a 13-year MLB career in which he made 705 appearances for nine teams. “The time has come for me to retire as a Major League Baseball player,” Diekman said Friday in an X post.
