Hillary Clinton last week warned that Vice President Kamala Harris’ opponents will try to misrepresent the candidate as the election approaches.

“There will be concerted efforts to distort and pervert Kamala Harris — who she is, what she stands for, what she’s done,” she said during a Friday interview at a conference held by her family’s foundation.

The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee pointed to claims regarding Clinton that circulated through the media before that election. The claims surrounded a child sex-trafficking ring some social media users alleged she ran.

A man fired a gun in a Washington, D.C., pizza shop where the ring was allegedly based after the claims began to spread.

“This is dangerous stuff. It starts online, often on the dark web. It migrates,” Clinton said. “It’s picked up by the pro-Trump media. It’s then reported on by everybody else, which makes sure it has about 100% coverage, and people believe it.”

Clinton added that while she doesn’t know what Harris’ opponents will make up, “we’ll have to work very, very hard to make sure that it is exposed as the lie that it is.”

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has repeatedly attacked Harris’ personal characteristics. On Saturday, he told a crowd at a Wisconsin rally that Harris and President Joe Biden are “mentally impaired” while criticizing the administration’s approach to combating illegal immigration.

“Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way,” Trump said, mispronouncing Harris’ name. “And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anybody would know this.”

The former president has frequently criticized Harris’ record on immigration, referring to her as a “border czar.” Biden in 2021 directed the vice president to address the root causes of migration from some Central American countries.

Trump has also called the vice president a “Marxist,” citing her past praise for the “defund the police” movement.

“We had four years of incompetence. We can’t have another four years of incompetence, because we’re not gonna have a country anymore,” Trump said at the rally. “She’s incompetent and a bad person, but she’s incompetent, grossly incompetent. She’s a Marxist.”
