RIO DE JANEIRO — As we head into Week 2 of the Rio Games, let's look at some of the winners and losers from the opening seven days.

Winner: Kazakhstan. Gets its first Olympic swimming medal. And it's gold. Gold, I tell you. Dmitriy Balandin pulled a stunning upset in the 200-meter breaststroke Wednesday night, winning from the eighth lane to put his central Asian country on the swimming medal stand for the first time.

Loser: Men's gymnastics. Getting no respect. Not only is the venue half-filled and often listless, NBC devoted only about 20 minutes to the team final during its four hours of prime-time coverage Monday.

Winner: Simone Biles. What an athlete. What a star. Biles soared to the all-around title Thursday, putting the gap between her and everyone else on full display. Her total of 62.198 was well clear of teammate Aly Raisman, who finished her remarkable comeback with a silver medal, and Russia's Aliya Mustafina.

Losers: Hungry fans. At many venues, not only are the lines crazy long, but the food is crazy bad and crazy scarce. Tip: Bring snack bars.

Winner: Diana Taurasi. U.S. basketball player broke the single-game U.S. Olympic 3-point record with six in a rout of Serbia.

Losers: U.S. women's basketball

opponents. Does the United States have another Dream Team?

Winner: Carmelo Anthony. Became the most prolific scorer in U.S. Olympic men's basketball history, passing LeBron James. Anthony (Towson Catholic) carried the team to victory as the Americans struggled against a tenacious Australian team.

Winners: Brazilian fans. They cheer, they jeer, they dance, they sing, they boo. They're the story in the stands for Rio.

Winner: Conor Dwyer. Not only did the kid from Winnetka win gold and bronze, but when he gets back home, he'll throw a ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field.
