PepsiCo will shut down a Frito-Lay storage facility in Aberdeen, laying off 56 workers this summer.

The warehouse, which is near the main Frito-Lay manufacturing plant on Hickory Drive, is set to close by July 12, according to a notice filed Wednesday with the state labor department.

Frito-Lay’s longtime manufacturing operations in Aberdeen will not be affected, the company confirmed. PepsiCo employs about 700 people at the manufacturing site in Aberdeen.

“This week, PepsiCo Foods U.S. announced the closure of our offsite warehouse in Aberdeen. Our manufacturing plant, main warehouse, distribution and transportation teams in Aberdeen will remain operational,” PepsiCo Foods US said. “We continually reassess our operations to ensure they align with our current needs.”

Aberdeen Mayor Patrick McGrady said he’s happy that Frito-Lay is keeping its manufacturing in the city and hopes to get the storage facility “retooled for a future occupant.”

PepsiCo took over the warehouse from Saks Fifth Avenue, which pulled out of the building at 500 Hickory Drive in 2019.

The main Frito-Lay production plant opened in 1994 and got a conditional $60 million expansion grant in 2016 that required the company to hire an additional 140 workers within two years.
