Yankees: Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 31st home run, Gerrit Cole pitched five innings for his first win of the season and the Yanks beat the Blue Jays 8-1 on Sunday to split their four-game series. Juan Soto was a late addition to the Yankees’ lineup after sitting out Saturday’s loss because of a bruised right hand.

Astros: Astros star Jose Altuve was ejected for the second time in his major league career after tossing his helmet and bat when umpires called him out on what appeared to be a foul ball. The Astros had a 4-2 lead and runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh inning against the Mets on Sunday when Altuve appeared to foul a ball off his left foot. The ball went on three hops to third baseman Mark Vientos, who threw to first as Altuve remained in the batter’s box. James Jean, umpiring behind the plate for the first time after making his major league debut Friday, didn’t signal a foul ball. Altuve argued and manager Joe Espada came onto the field. The four umpires conferenced — that type of call is not subject to a video review — and crew chief Alan Porter signaled the out call. Altuve then slammed his helmet and bat and was ejected.

Phillies: Alec Bohm homered, Trea Turner hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh and the Phillies rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Marlins on Sunday. Nick Castellanos doubled, had two singles and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who upped their MLB-best record to 55-29.

Cardinals: Starter Lance Lynn pitched six sparkling innings, and the Cards beat the Reds 2-0 on Sunday for a split of their four-game series. Lynn (4-3) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one.

Guardians: Guardians are sending Triston McKenzie to the minors to work out his pitching problems. The AL Central leaders optioned the right-hander to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, two days after he went a season-low 2 1/3 innings in a 10-3 loss to the Royals. To take McKenzie’s spot, the team activated right-hander Gavin Williams from the 60-day injured list. Williams hasn’t pitched for the Guardians this season after he injured his elbow while throwing a weighted ball in spring training.

Pirates: Oneil Cruz and Rowdy Tellez each hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Pirates took advantage of Bailey Falter’s strong start to beat the Braves 4-2 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Bryan Reynolds’ 25-game hitting streak ended with two strikeouts and two groundouts in his four at-bats. It was the longest streak in the majors this season and the Pirates’ longest since Kenny Lofton’s 26-game streak in 2003.

Red Sox: Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer, Jarren Duran added a solo shot and the Red Sox ended the Padres’ five-game winning streak with a 4-1 win on Sunday.

Rays: Taj Bradley tied a career high with 11 strikeouts, Isaac Paredes homered and the Rays beat the Nationals 5-0 on Sunday. Bradley (3-4) allowed three hits and walked two over 5 2/3 innings in his fifth consecutive strong start. He has allowed four earned runs in 29 innings over the stretch.

Royals: Seth Lugo struck out 10 in six shutout innings to earn his major league-high 11th win, and Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer as the Royals beat the Guardians 6-2 on Sunday.

Mariners: Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo had to do more than just try and shut down the Twins from the mound on Sunday. Castillo had to grab a bat and step in as a hitter after Mariners catcher Mitch Garver was injured by getting hit on the wrist and forcing a major reshuffling of the Mariners lineup. With Cal Raleigh — the Mariners’ other catcher — already in the lineup as the designated hitter, the Mariners were forced to forfeit the DH when Raleigh entered the game in the third inning behind the plate. That meant Castillo had to be put into the lineup and in the fourth inning, he stepped to the plate for his first plate appearance since Oct. 1, 2021, while he was still with the Reds. The bat never left Castillo’s shoulder as he struck out looking on three pitches.
