Rangers: Multi-Cy Young Award winners Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer are prepared to rejoin the Rangers’ starting rotation after completing rehab assignments, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday before the team’s 7-4 victory against the visiting Angels. “He’s ready to start here,” Bochy said of two-time winner deGrom. “Same with Max. Both had great outings, terrific outings.” Bochy said the staff is still discussing specific dates for deGrom and Scherzer with the possibility that deGrom could pitch Friday in the second of four games against the Mariners in Seattle. For the 36-year-old deGrom, it would be his first big league game since April 28, 2023, when he was pulled from his sixth Rangers start and subsequently had elbow surgery. He threw 49 pitches for Double-A Frisco on Saturday working primarily on off-speed pitches. Scherzer threw 59 pitches for Triple-A Round Rock at Las Vegas on Saturday, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out eight of the 14 batters he faced. The 40-year-old has been sidelined with right shoulder fatigue and a nerve issue, most recently starting a major league game on July 30. Scherzer is 2-4, pitching 39 1/3 innings in eight starts with a 3.89 ERA.
Royals: Michael Wacha pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, Garrett Hampson and Salvador Perez drove in runs and the Royals beat the Twins 2-0 to complete a series sweep of their closest pursuers in the AL wild-card race. Wacha (12-7) struck out seven while allowing just one walk in his 100th career win. The host Royals moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the Twins for the second wild-card spot.
Braves: Sean Murphy’s infield ground ball with the bases loaded scored a sliding Eli White in the 11th, and the Braves rallied for a gritty 4-3 win over the visiting Blue Jays. The Braves now have 12 extra-inning wins, which leads the big leagues. They took two of three games from the Blue Jays and are tied with the Mets for the final wild card in a tight NL playoff race. The Mets saw their nine-game winning streak end against the Reds. The Braves got another brilliant outing from LHP Chris Sale, who pitched six shutout innings. White had two crucial hits after entering the game as a defensive replacement at second base, which was just his fourth game in the big leagues at the position. The Braves’ decisive rally started when White led off the 11th with a bunt single that advanced automatic runner Michael Harris II to third base. Adam Duvall then reached on an error by Blue Jays 3B Addison Barger, whose throw sailed wide to first and scored Harris to tie the game. Murphy followed with the bouncing ball up the middle off Zach Pop (1-4) and White was able to score, sliding in ahead of the throw from shortstop Ernie Clement. Sale — a leading contender for the NL Cy Young Award — struck out seven, walked one and hit two batters.
Extra innings: Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th HR to tie his career high, Jack Flaherty pitched another gem and the NL West-leading Dodgers beat the AL Central-leading Guardians 4-0 in record-tying heat. The first-pitch temp of 103 matched the hottest in Dodger Stadium history. Flaherty (12-6) went 7 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing four hits. ... Hall of Fame 3B Wade Boggs announced Saturday on social media that he has prostate cancer. Boggs, 66, sounded optimistic about his prognosis.
