It might not have been as dramatic as Bri Harris' goal, but Makenna Dean will take it.

Dean, who scored the only goal during regulation for the Broadneck girls soccer team in its game against No. 6 Archbishop Spalding on Saturday night, gathered a loose ball and fired it into the empty net midway through the second overtime to lift the Bruins to a 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers.

Emily York stayed with the play and was able to do just enough to gather it as Archbishop Spalding goalie Jilli Savageau came out to challenge.

“I give Emily York 100 percent credit for getting to the ball, then when the ball fell out of the goalie's hands, I was in such a team mindset and really wanted to get the ball in the goal for my team,” Dean said.

Just last year, Harris scored the winning goal against Leonardtown late in the first overtime to lift the No. 2 Bruins to the Class 4A state title.

“Last year, a senior [Harris] did the same exact thing and scored a game-winning goal,” Dean said. “Everyone was extremely happy, so I think that everyone knows that we're here to win.”

The Bruins earned the victory despite watching the Cavaliers carry play for most of the game.

“They outplayed us for 45, 50 maybe even 60 minutes tonight,” Broadneck coach John Camm said. “We hung tough and got better as the game went on. We played a little bit more composed as the game went on and put a little bit more pressure on them.”

After a scoreless first half, Dean scored a minute into the second half off an assist from Talia Gabarra to give the Bruins the lead. The Cavaliers answered eight minutes later when Kaitlyn Keaton went high to the far post, and the Cavaliers had plenty of additional opportunities throughout the remainder of regulation. Spalding was close to scoring another two goals, but the Bruins had a defender on the goal line each time to clear the ball.

“That's the one thing about soccer. The better team doesn't always win,” Archbishop Spalding coach Ashly Kennedy said. “No disrespect to Broadneck by any means, but our team knew going into this, this was going to be a big challenge for us as we approach our first conference game.”

The Bruins played in their second straight overtime game after tying Urbana last week at the Urbana Tournament. They'll begin county play Thursday against Southern.

Saturday's game also served as a good tuneup for the Cavaliers, who will open Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference play Tuesday against McDonogh.
