We asked readers who Maryland should hire as the school’s next men’s basketball coach before Tuesday’s hiring of Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams. Hiring Williams was a popular thought among fans in the days before it became official, although other fans preferred UConn assistant Luke Murray, among others. Here are the results from our online poll:

Luke Murray, UConn assistant — 29.3% (185 votes)

Buzz Williams, Texas A&M coach — 27.3% (172 votes)

Duane Simpkins, American coach — 16% (101 votes)

Tony Skinn, George Mason coach — 11.6% (73 votes)

Other — 8.6% (54 votes)

Andy Enfield, SMU coach — 4.9% (31 votes)

Kim English, Providence coach — 2.2% (14 votes)

Here’s what some fans have told us about the team’s looming decision (answers have been edited for clarity and grammar):

Chris Beard would be an incredible hire. He won at Texas Tech and is doing the same at Ole Miss at football schools. With the new practice facility and the financial commitment from the administration Maryland should be one of the top 10 jobs in the country. — Edward Taylor

I’m not going to pretend to be an athletic director (which Maryland currently lacks) or anyone else with the credentials to decide who might be a good hire for the Terps’ vacant coaching job. But I do feel that it should not be difficult to upgrade the position, as Willard was a decidedly ordinary coach. He was outcoached on multiple occasions this season, particularly late in games, and his team lacked intensity and emotion (as does he). If only there was another Morgan Wootten available … — Laurence Berbert

I agree with Len Elmore and Tom McMillan that we need a Maryland grad. Steve Blake should be in the mix and has expressed his interest. He was a great Maryland player with a distinguished NBA career. There probably are a number of Maryland grads with excellent credentials — let’s look at home! — Jim Putnam

Šarunas Jasikevicius. He’s a Maryland alum and possibly the top coach in EuroLeague. He’s a former pro who played in the NBA that could sell recruits and transfers on knowing what it takes to get to the next level. He’s passionate, a little bit crazy, and fans would love him. — TCR

Chris Collins, Northwestern’s coach, knows he can’t win a national championship from there. He could be looking to move and Maryland is looking for a proven high-profile coach, and the Terps have the money to make him one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in a major conference. — Buster
