COLLEGE PARK — Kaylene Smikle scored 21 points, Christina Dalce and Shyanne Sellers had double-doubles and No. 11 Maryland women’s basketball rolled past Towson, 98-63, on Sunday.

Dalce had 13 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double in five games and Sellers contributed 10 points and 10 assists for the Terps, who are 5-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season. Smikle made 9 of 12 shots and added four rebounds. Sarah Te-Biasu scored 13 points, Saylor Poffenbarger had 12 off the bench and Allie Kubek added 10.

The last time the Terps had six players in double figures was against Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 16, 2021.

“I told the team before this game, we knew Towson was going to be hungry for a win,” Terps coach Brenda Frese said. “I thought they competed like that, especially in that first 20 minutes, but I loved where we were. After that first quarter, we had 10 assists and only one turnover. That’s been something we’ve been intentional about. Building that positive assist-to-turnover ratio. … And in the five games, we’ve played just different combinations, different ways for us to be able to win. So just want to continue to keep building on this.”

After leading 54-40 at halftime, Maryland held Towson to 23 points in the second half. The Tigers shot 31% and made only six two-point baskets in the second half to go with 3-for-13 shooting from 3-point range.

Poffenbarger hit two of Maryland’s five 3-pointers in the first quarter and the Terps led 33-18 after one. They extended their lead to 20 with a little under three minutes remaining before halftime.

The Terps shot 62% after halftime and 60% for the game, including 11 of 17 from 3-point range (65%). They outrebounded the Tigers 46-18.

“I think we played super unselfish,” Sellers said. “You see, most of everybody that took a shot was shooting over 50%. That’s huge. Again, going back to the assist, 27 assists, it’s phenomenal. And getting everybody in, it’s just huge for us. I feel like the difference between this year and last year is just not so much wear and tear on our bodies. Just being able to go that deep is going to pay dividends in the long run.”

It was Smikle’s fourth consecutive game scoring 20 or more points, making her the first Terp to string together that many performances since Jakia Brown-Turner last season (five). The junior transfer from Rutgers is averaging 21.5 points over the four-game stretch.

Against her former team, Kubek eclipsed 1,000 career points between both schools. Maryland has won 10 straight meetings with Towson dating to 2010.

India Johnston made five 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Tigers (0-4). Aminata Diakite added 13 points.

Towson coach Laura Harper played at Maryland from 2005 through 2008. She was the 2006 Final Four Most Outstanding Player when Maryland won the NCAA championship.
