The iconic couch where it all began went for nearly $30,000 as items from the sitcom that’s still beamed into our homes 30 years after its debut were sold recently at a commemorative auction.
Nostalgia-stricken fans from 30 countries snapped up a slew of “Friends” memorabilia, paying many times the asking price for a number of the 110 items on offer. “The One With the 30th Anniversary Auction” was held online and in-person in Los Angeles, in honor of the show’s anniversary.
One lucky buyer snagged a replica of the orange sofa, the Central Perk café centerpiece that is now the most recognizable and highest-priced item. The velvet couch that serves as the friends’ coffee-shop perch went for $29,250, 10 to 15 times more than the initial estimate of $2,000 to $3,000. Likewise a reproduction of the Central Perk sign, slated to sell for $500 to $700, brought in $5,850.
Then there was the Geller Cup Trophy prop, featured in the ninth episode of Season 3, “The One with the Football,” known as the Thanksgiving episode. Instead of selling for $300 to $500 as predicted, the prop went for $9,100. Not bad for a troll doll nailed to a piece of wood.
Organizers called it a testament to the show’s enduring appeal.
Netflix is done with Harry and Meghan: Despite recent reports that Netflix has gone full steam ahead in producing a Meghan Markle cooking show and a series about professional polo with Prince Harry, the streamer is “not expected” to renew the splashy, five-year, $100 million contract it signed with the couple in 2020.
That’s according to Puck co-founder Matthew Belloni and entertainment reporter Lesley Goldberg. In Belloni’s newsletter, he and Goldberg listed Netflix’s deal with the California-based royal couple, and their Archewell production company, as one of the “worst” of Hollywood’s Peak TV era.
They noted that the couple’s 2022 docuseries, “Harry and Meghan,” about their departure from their unhappy royal lives, was a blockbuster hit.
Belloni and Goldberg said that none of the couple’s other projects has “connected” in the same way, including Meghan’s “passion project,” an animated children’s series called “Pearl,” which was canceled before it even got started. Belloni and Goldberg also said that Meghan’s forthcoming cooking show and Harry’s announced polo series are two other “offerings” that aren’t expected to “connect.”
When it comes to Harry and Meghan’s relationship with Netflix, recent reports said that Meghan’s cooking show wouldn’t be released until spring 2025. The streaming service has yet to announce when it is ready to release the show.
