If there’s one person who knows how to dress for the Artscape VIP party, it’s Sandy Smalls. For the last 20 years, she was running the party. However, she recently left the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts to become a manager at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

This year, Smalls, who wouldn’t disclose her age — “let me put it this way, I have an almost 40-year-old daughter” — came to the fete as a guest.

Knowing the hot history of the party, Smalls arrived in an outfit that fit the air — figurative and literal — of the soiree.

“I just wanted be comfortable and free, loose and light,” she said.

How did it feel coming to the party as an invitee?

“Weird. I felt like I should’ve been moving around, directing people. It’s like when you leave the house and you don’t have your earrings on,” Smalls said.
