Dr. Sung Eui Kim, obstetrician-gynecologist
Dr. Sun Eui Kim, an Anne Arundel County obstetrician and gynecologist who had engaged in missionary work, died Sept. 19 of complications following surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
The Pikesville resident was 71.
The son of Dr. Joong Kim, a physician, and Bok In Kim, a homemaker, Sung Eui Kim was born and raised in Gwangju, South Korea.
After earning his medical degree in 1968 from Korea University Medical School, he moved to Baltimore, where he completed an internship in obstetrics and gynecology at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and a residency in the same specialty at St. Agnes Hospital.
Dr. Kim established a private practice in obstetrics and gynecology in 1973. At the time of his death, he was operating an office on South Crain Highway in Glen Burnie.
He had privileges at Harbor Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore Washington Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Since 1994, he had been a clinical instructor in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Hopkins Hospital.
He also performed gynecological procedures using the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery system, a means of minimally invasive treatment, family members said.
He met Jung Ja in 1969 at the church they both attended. They were married in 1971 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Dr. Kim was a member of Bethel Korean Presbyterian Church in Ellicott City, and served as a church elder for two decades.
His greatest passion, family members said, was missionary work, which he carried out through his church.
He traveled annually to struggling countries to render medical assistance, build medical clinics and “share God's word,” said his daughter, Jennie Kim Harman of New York City.
Dr. Kim traveled to Banda Aceh, Indonesia, after the 2004 tsunami, and to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He also brought humanitarian medical aid to Thailand and the Middle East, among many other locations.
Services are private.
In addition to his daughter, Dr. Kim is survived by his wife of 45 years, a registered nurse and real estate agent; two sons, John Kim and Michael Kim, both of New York City; three sisters, Mija Son and Kyuwan Chang, both of Baltimore, and Seunghae Chung of South Korea; and five grandchildren.
