The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced more presenters Tuesday for the upcoming Oscars.
Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Elle Fanning, Whoopi Goldberg, Scarlett Johansson, John Lithgow, Amy Poehler, June Squibb and Bowen Yang have been added to the presenting lineup. They’ll join last year’s acting winners — Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph Joy — on the Oscar stage.
Though the academy initially said it would bring back the “fab five” style of presenting the acting awards, with five previous winners per category, organizers have reportedly abandoned those plans for this year. Unlike previous years, the original song nominees will not be performed during the ceremony.
Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars, airing March 2 on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
Artists pledge to match Roan’s donation: After her Grammy Awards acceptance speech about how record labels treat their developing musicians, Chappell Roan made a donation of $25,000 to “struggling dropped artists” — and might have started a trend.
Charli XCX and Noah Kahan announced pledges to match Roan’s donation, which she made in response to the author of an op-ed critical of her Grammys speech.
“I’m inspired by you,” said Kahan in an Instagram story Saturday. “Happy to help get the ball rolling. Money where my mouth is!”
“i am going to match your $25k to support artists’ access to healthcare,” Charli XCX also said in an Instagram story Saturday. “i saw (Noah Kahan) say that he would do the same and so i thought i’d follow suit. your speech at the grammys was inspiring and thoughtful and from a genuine place of care. happy to help get the ball rolling too. money where my mouth is.”
The donations mark the launch of Backline’s We Got You! campaign, a fund to support artists’ mental health in an effort to create a safer, more sustainable music industry.
Singer reveals cancer diagnosis: David Johansen, a singer known for his Buster Poindexter alter ego and for founding the influential punk band New York Dolls, announced Monday he has stage 4 cancer.
The “Hot Hot Hot” singer, 75, was originally diagnosed in 2020 and had kept his illness private, even after it progressed to a brain tumor. He decided to go public due to financial hardship and to ask for donations to pay for medical care.
“David is a legend but he’s also my very real very sick dad,” his daughter Leah Hennessy said in an Instagram post.
The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which is handling the donations, is also selling an exclusive T-shirt with proceeds going toward Johansen’s expenses, which include full- time nursing and physical therapy with the hopes of regaining some mobility following a broken back in November that left him bedridden and incapacitated.
