Towson women upset Loyola, 9-5
Fourth-quarter run fuels Tigers over No. 20 Greyhounds
Kaitlyn Montalbano, Michelle Gildea and Michaela Duranti l had two goals each to lead the Towson women's lacrosse team (4-0) over No. 20 Loyola Maryland, 9-5, in the Greyhounds' home opener on Sunday.
Maddy Blakeman led Loyola (1-3) with two goals and Margaret Filippelli added one goal and one assist. Molly Wolf (Bryn Mawr), who finished with a game-high 10 saves, made two saves while the Greyhounds played a man down early in the first half before Montalbano scored the game's first goal at the 15:45 mark.
The Tigers went ahead 3-0 with 10:41 left to go in the first half, but Loyola scored three in a row in the final 5:34 to tie the game at halftime. Gildea regained the lead for Towson less than one minute into the second half, but Filippelli won the ensuing draw and found Blakeman for a fast-break goal 11 seconds later to tie the game at 4.
Towson used another 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 16:29 to play. Hannah Savage scored with 15:21 left to cut the Greyhounds' deficit to 7-5, but the Tigers scored two more goals to seal the win.
Nation men
No. 3 Syracuse 9, Army West Point 8: The Black Knights (2-2) used a late rally to tie the game at 8 in the closing minutes, but Tim Barber scored the winning goal with 3:27 remaining to help the Orange (3-0) hang on.
Warren Hill made a career-high 10 saves, including deflecting a shot off the post with five seconds to go, and Derek DeJoe and Sergio Salcido each scored two goals for Syracuse.
No. 11 Virginia 15, Penn 10: James Pannell led No. 10 Virginia (2-2) with three goals and two assists as the Cavaliers defeated the visiting Quakers (1-1).
Leading 6-5 at halftime, Virginia used a 5-0 run to start the third quarter to take an 11-5 lead.
No. 2 Denver 16, Dartmouth 6: Tyler Pace scored three goals and three assists for a career-high six points and was named the Faceoff Classic Most Valuable Player after the host Pioneers defeated the Big Green.
Denver earned its second straight win by a margin of at least 10 goals and had its third straight game in which at least 10 players scored.
Air Force 13, Sacred Heart 10: The Pioneers (2-3) used a 7-2 run in the second half to close within two goals of the Falcons (3-2), but fell in their second game of the Faceoff Classic.
Austin Smith led Air Force with three goals and Chris Walsch had two goals and two assists.
Nation women
No. 2 Syracuse 16, No. 7 Northwestern 12: Kayla Treanor scored four goals to lift the Orange (5-0) over the visiting Wildcats.
With the score tied at 8 with 23:41 remaining, Syracuse used a 5-0 run to pull away for good.
Sheila Nesselbush scored four goals for Northwestern.
No. 12 Duke 12, No. 16 Penn 6: Maddy Acton and Kelci Smesko each scored hat tricks and the Blue Devils (3-3) rebounded from two straight losses to defeat the Quakers (1-1).
Leading 7-6 early in the second half, Duke used a 5-0 run to seal the victory.
No. 8 Stony Brook 18, Bryant 4: Kylie Ohlmiller tied a career-high with five goals and the visiting Seawolves (1-0) routed the Bulldogs (2-2).
Kristin Yevoli had three goals in seven minutes in the second half for the Seawolves.
No. 18 Ohio State 16, Duquesne 6: Cian Dabrowski scored five goals to power the Buckeyes (3-1) over the host Dukes (1-2).
