The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office is investigating Sunday’s fatal shooting of a man in Dundalk by a Baltimore County police officer.

The IID said in a news release Monday night that a preliminary investigation showed two Baltimore County police officers responded to a call reporting a mental health crisis on the 8200 block of North Boundary Road in Dundalk at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

While one officer was at the front door of the residence, another officer went into the alley behind the residence, where a man matching the description provided by the 911 caller fired on the officer, the IID said in the release.

The man was wounded during a firefight between him and the officer, according to the release. Police recovered a loaded handgun from the scene close to where the man was, the IID said.

Medics transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured. The circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation, according to the release.

The police officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, the release says.

The IID, which is tasked with examining fatal police encounters or those with injuries that might result in death, said it generally releases the names of those involved in the incident within two business days of an occurrence.

Likewise, investigators usually release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days, with some exceptions allowed to extend the time frame, including to allow family to view footage before it is released.
