Red Sox: 3B Pablo Sandoval was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a strained left shoulder. Sandoval, who is in the second year of a five-year, $95 million deal with the Red Sox, lost his starting job to Travis Shaw late in spring training and is hitless in six at-bats with four strikeouts.
Braves: OF Hector Olivera was placed on paid administrative leave by Major League Baseball after he was arrested and charged with assaulting a woman at a hotel outside Washington. Officers were called to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City, Va., where a woman with visible bruises reported that Olivera had assaulted her, Arlington Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said. Olivera was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor, and bond was set at $10,000.
Yankees: Closer Aroldis Chapman threw a perfect inning in his first extended spring training game. Chapman is working out at the Yankees minor-league complex in Florida while serving a 30-game suspension stemming from baseball's new domestic violence policy. Chapman, who regularly tops 100 mph with his fastball, reached 98 during a 15-pitch outing.
Cardinals: LHP Marco Gonzales will have season-ending Tommy John surgery. Gonzales, who made one start last season because of a shoulder issue, injured his elbow during spring training.
Extra innings: Teams will wear specially designed jerseys for Mother's Day and Father's Day. Team scripts and logos will incorporate pink for Mother's Day on May 8 and light blue for Father's Day on June 19, as well as caps with gray crowns and brims. Clubs also will wear camouflage design scripts for Memorial Day on May 30 and caps with red, white and blue on the Fourth of July, along with special jerseys. For the Blue Jays, Memorial Day jerseys will feature a Canadian Forces color scheme and July 4 caps will have a Maple Leaf design.
