Joe Sherburne scored a career-high 28 points and UMBC beat host Mount St. Mary's, 78-70, on Wednesday night.

Sherburne shot 9-for-12 from the field and made six 3-point attempts and four shots from the line. Jairus Lyles added 24 points for the Retrievers (7-1), who have won three straight since their lone loss, 78-66, against Navy on Nov.?23.

Elijah Long (John Carroll) had 17 points to lead Mount St. Mary's (1-9). Mawdo Sallah added 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Mountaineers led by one point at halftime. UMBC opened the second half on a 24-5 run and led 52-34 with about 12 minutes left. Sherburne scored 12 points on four 3-pointers and Lyles had six points during the stretch. Mount St. Mary's pulled within 76-70 with 16 seconds left but didn't get closer

Akron 87, Coppin State 63: Jimond Ivey had 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, Josh Williams hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points, and the host Zips (7-2) beat the Eagles (0-11).

Akron won its 22nd straight game at Rhodes Arena to move within four of tying the arena record.

Keith Shivers led Coppin State with 13 points and Dejuan Clayton added 12 points. The Eagles were just 5-for-10 from the free-throw line compared with Akron's 25 attempts.

Virginia Tech 75, UMES 59: Zach LeDay scored 23 points to carry the host Hokies (7-1) past the Hawks (1-8).

Ryan Andino, who made seven 3-pointers, scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to lead UMES.

Women

Morgan State 69, UMBC 61: Braennan Farrar scored 22 points to lead the Bears (2-6) past the host Retrievers (2-6).

Laura Castaldo had 22 points for UMBC. Morgan State went on a 24-11 run in the third quarter.

Delaware 47, Loyola Maryland 45: Lauren Daugherty (seven points) pulled the visiting Greyhounds (3-5) within 44-42 with 18 seconds to go before the Blue Hens (6-3) made three straight free throws to secure the win.

Bri Betz-White scored in double figures for the seventh time in eight games, leading Loyola with 15 points.

Syracuse 76, Coppin State 30: The host Orange (7-3) shot 40 percent from the field, including 11 3-pointers, and extended their lead to 50 points with 2:44 left in the third quarter. Coppin State fell to 0-8.

UMES 63, Mount St. Mary's 52: The visiting Hawks (4-3) outscored the Mount (2-6) by nine points in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.

Mount St. Mary's Caroline Hummell finished with a game-high 16 points. Mariah McCoy led UMES with 15.

Navy 93, Goucher 40: Morgan Taylor scored 19 points to lead five Mids in double-digit scoring as host Navy (7-3) beat the Gophers (1-6).

Briana Bull (Owings Mills) had 16 points for Goucher.
