Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon named former James Madison and Marist coach Matt Brady as the team’s director of player personnel Monday.

Brady, who served as an assistant at LaSalle last season, replaces Cliff Warren, who held the newly created position briefly before leaving to become an assistant at Massachusetts.

In a statement released by the athletic department, Turgeon said, “Matt is a very accomplished head coach and assistant who under his leadership and direction led various basketball programs to unprecedented heights during his tenure.

“His proven track record in player development and his experience as a head coach at the Division I level will greatly benefit our staff and student-athletes. Matt will make a seamless transition to our staff and we are very excited to welcome him to our basketball program.”

Said Brady: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Mark Turgeon and a very talented staff. I have long admired Coach Turgeon’s coaching accomplishments and have known and followed him throughout each of his successful stops. Maryland basketball is poised for even greater success and I am really looking forward to contributing to this outstanding program.”

Brady, 51, was the head coach at James Madison for eight seasons, compiling a record of 139-125, including four 20-win seasons. Inheriting a last-place team in 2008, Brady’s first team won 21 games. He took the Dukes to the 2013 NCAA tournament.

Brady also spent four seasons at Marist, where one of his assistant coaches was current Maryland assistant Bino Ranson. He had three winning seasons there, including a 25-9 season in 2006-07 when the Red Foxes won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title and went to the National Invitation Tournament.

In the job as director of player personnel, which Turgeon created this spring for Warren after naming Kevin Broadus as a full-time assistant, Brady’s duties will be restricted to off-court duties that don’t include recruiting.

Terps’ Carter named to Bednarik Award watch list: Maryland senior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. was named to the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The award has been presented to the nation’s best defensive player annually since 1995.

An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in each of the past two years, Carter has started a team-high 25 straight games dating to the start of the 2015 season. He led the team in tackles in 2015 and 2016, totaling 213 during that span.

Carter, of Fort Washington, started all 13 games in 2016 and led the Terps with 110 tackles. His 8.5 tackles per game ranked seventh in the Big Ten, and he was second on the team with six sacks and third with nine tackles for loss.

In addition, Carter forced two fumbles, broke up four passes and returned an interception for a touchdown. He had a big game in the regular-season finale win against Rutgers, making a career-high 15 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Virginia senior linebacker Micah Kiser (Gilman) and Navy senior linebacker Micah Thomas were also named to the list.
