Shiffrin recovering after surgery

Mikaela Shiffrin is recovering after undergoing abdominal surgery on Thursday night to clean out a puncture wound she received in a giant slalom crash two weeks ago. Shiffrin posted an update Saturday on Instagram. There’s no timetable for Shiffrin’s return to racing after suffering bruises and the deep puncture to her hip area — but no ligament or bone damage — during a crash on Nov. 30 in Killington, Vermont. She was leading after the first run of the GS as she chased after her 100th World Cup win. The 29-year-old Shiffrin explained in her post Saturday that her surgery was unexpected and came “after feeling a bit under the weather.” Shiffrin has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals — along with a silver — and seven world championships. She passed Lindsey Vonn’s women’s mark of 82 World Cup victories on Jan. 24, 2023, during a giant slalom in Italy. That March, Shiffrin broke Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s Alpine mark for most World Cup wins when she captured her 87th career race.

Coach Bridgewater wins state title

Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater went back to his high school alma mater this season and won a state championship. Bridgewater, in his first season as coach at Miami Northwestern High, led the Bulls to the Florida Class 3A title. The Bulls beat Jacksonville Raines High 41-0 on Saturday in the final. “It’s great to be back on top,” Bridgewater said after leading the Bulls to their eighth state championship. His team finished the season 12-2, outscoring its five playoff opponents by a combined score of 262-12. Bridgewater went to college at Louisville before playing in the NFL with six franchises over nine seasons. He finished his career with 15,120 yards and 75 TD passes. Born and raised in Miami, Bridgewater started for Miami Northwestern from 2008-2010, recording more than 5,000 yards passing and leading the Bulls to the state final as a sophomore. He developed into one of the top dual-threat QBs in the nation before going on to have a successful college career at Louisville. The Vikings selected Bridgewater with the No. 32 pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Man United rallies to stun Man City

Amad Diallo struck a 90th-minute winner as Manchester United staged a stunning late comeback to beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday. Four-time defending champ City led the Manchester derby 1-0 going into the 88th minute at the Etihad Stadium. But the game was turned round in dramatic fashion as Bruno Fernandes leveled the game from the penalty spot and Diallo, above, sealed victory for United. “We know what the derby means. We are not in a position to be bouncing about anything. We are moving forward,” Fernandes said. City fans jeered at the final whistle as their once dominant team’s woeful run of form extended to one win and eight losses in 11 games. “I’m the boss, I’m the manager and I’m not good enough. It’s as simple as that,” Guardiola said. It was a first derby victory for new United head coach Ruben Amorim, who led Sporting Lisbon to a 4-1 win against City in one of his last games in charge of the Portuguese club in November. United is 12th and five points behind fifth-placed City. —Associated Press
