It’s Eddie Murray Week as the slugging first baseman lashes two game-winning hits, plus two home runs, as the Orioles win five of seven games to keep a narrow hold on first place.
On Tankard Night, before an announced — and exuberant — crowd of 44,970, Murray lines a two-run single in the eighth inning to beat Texas, 8-6. Two nights later, he homers in a 6-0 win over the Rangers, then slams No. 22 in an 8-2 victory at Cleveland. Next game, Murray hits an RBI double in the 10th inning as the Indians fall, 4-3. It’s his 29th RBI in his past 30 games during one of those hot streaks the Orioles have come to expect.
“That’s why he’s Eddie, I guess,” manager Joe Altobelli says.
Steady Scott McGregor wins twice, giving him 10 victories in his past 11 decisions and 14 wins overall, best in the American League. Both rookie pitchers triumph: Mike Boddicker blanks Texas, in 96-degree heat, for his third shutout on the same day that Brooks Robinson is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame; and Storm Davis stymies Cleveland in that 8-2 win. It’s the seventh victory in the past eight decisions for the young right-hander.
“He’s a gem,” Altobelli says of Davis, 21.
The Orioles go 19-7 (.731) in July in what will be their best month of the regular season.
