Get out your walking shoes.
Charles Street will be closed to vehicle traffic downtown on Saturday, June 14 — but not pedestrians — as the popular daylong Promenade returns along the city’s historic thoroughfare.
The sixth annual street festival will allow Baltimoreans to easily pop into dozens of small neighborhood shops, restaurants and cultural attractions along a 1.3-mile stretch of Charles Street between Saratoga Street and North Avenue. There will be opportunities to listen to live music, visit the Walters Art Museum, tour the historic Washington Monument and participate in hands-on activities and workshops.
“The Charles Street Promenade brings to life our vision for a vibrant, walkable Downtown where people come first,” Shelonda Stokes, president of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, said in a news release. “It’s about connecting neighborhoods, creating space to explore and experiencing the energy that happens when we gather to enjoy … everything this historic corridor has to offer.”
Participating restaurants in the Midtown, Mount Vernon and Station North neighborhoods include Alma Cocina Latina, The Helmand and Marie Louise Bistro, the release said.
The event is being sponsored by the University of Baltimore and will be operated jointly by the Downtown Partnership and the Charles Street Development Corporation.
“Charles Street features some of our country’s most beautiful architecture,” said Kristin Speaker, the corporation’s executive director. “We celebrate its history as the city’s original main street while activating the corridor in an exciting, modern way.”
Charles Street will be closed between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.. A map of the promenade route can be found at charlesstreetpromenade.com.
