1800 Cockeysville home went from two bedrooms to four
A transitional home in Cockeysville is on the market for $875,000.
This two-story home has four bedrooms and 3
According to tax records, the original structure dates to 1800, when a two-room log cabin was built on the property.
The property was bought in 1952, and the owners added electricity, running water, central heat, a bath, and a kitchen. In the process of preserving and stabilizing the original chestnut log walls, they found the date “1742” carved over the door of the east wall. This piece of history has been preserved in a Plexiglas panel that is now in the upstairs.
The house was sold again, and in 1980 the new owners added a south and west addition, designed by Baltimore architect James Grieves, who is known for his design of the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pa.
The addition included a bathroom, great room and kitchen. Six years later, a north and east addition, designed by Michael Bowers, was added that included a downstairs master bathroom, a great room, breakfast room next to the kitchen and an upstairs bedroom and bath.
From the outside the house gives little or no evidence of the original log cabin. A large foyer with hardwood floors, which are found throughout the main level, steps down into the living room. A vaulted ceiling with exposed wood trusses and a wall of glass windows gives the room a fresh and airy feel. A fireplace takes center stage in the room. The vaulted ceilings continue to a large dining room, which also features a fireplace, 9-foot-high ceilings and plenty of light.
The family room is the original part of the log cabin and has paneled walls, a fireplace, hardwood floors, and beamed ceilings. A staircase leads from this room to the second floor.
An atrium leads from the dining room into the nearby kitchen with an attached breakfast room. The kitchen has white tile floors, stainless-steel appliances, wood cabinetry and an island. A set of doors from the breakfast room leads to an enclosed porch.
A master bedroom with a full bathroom is on the main floor. A door leads to a private deck. Built-in bookcases and two walk-in closets are featured. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of the outdoors.
A separate laundry room is on the main floor, as is another full bathroom.
The three bedrooms upstairs have slanted walls and have wall-to wall carpeting. A large full bathroom with a step-up bathtub is has ceramic tile floors.
