With a pair of touchdown catches against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, tight end Mark Andrews took sole possession of the Ravens’ all-time record in career receiving touchdowns with 43.
It took the veteran tight end seven seasons to reach that mark, passing tight end Todd Heap, who took a decade to reach 41.
“I’ve been blessed with incredible teammates and obviously No. 8 [quarterback Lamar Jackson] and having that connection, but I’m fortunate to have incredible teammates, unselfish guys,” Andrews said after his four-catch, 41-yard outing. “Coaches, players, everybody; and you got to look back at the guys like Todd Heap, and the guys that have done it before you and just be grateful that I’m in this situation.”
Heap and Andrews grew up about 20 minutes apart near Phoenix. Because of the Arizona connection, a young Andrews had an eye on Heap’s Ravens career.
“He’s an awesome dude, and an incredible player and obviously a Raven for life,” Andrews said.
Andrews also tied Ray Rice for the second-most overall touchdowns in team history and trails only running back Jamal Lewis, who had 47.
In the Ravens’ 41-31 win, Andrews caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jackson for Baltimore’s first score of the night.
Heading into a commercial break, ESPN play-by-play announcer Joe Buck made note that Baltimore would love to have Andrews return to being a prominent piece of the offense. That he was, later scoring his second touchdown in the final minutes of the third quarter, converting on fourth down.
He had only 13 catches through the first six games, including two games with no receptions.
Andrews didn’t score his first touchdown of the year until last week’s win over the Washington Commanders.
“It felt great to get in the end zone and help impact in that way,” Andrews said last week. “Usually, it doesn’t take me six games to get in there, but yeah, that was a fun one.”
His previous long drought was in 2021, when it took Andrews five weeks to find paydirt.
This scoreless drought for Andrews stretched back to Week 8 of last year. Jackson and fellow tight end Isaiah Likely both told Andrews he had to get one come Week 6.
“That’s crazy, man. We’ve been at it for a few years now,” Jackson said Monday night. “That’s great for Mark. I feel like he should have been had that last year, but we made it happen. It’s only more touchdowns from here, no doubt.”
