It’s the end of an era for one of the most well-known big-box stores: The last full-size Kmart store in the continental U.S. is set to close in October.

A store employee reached by phone Sunday confirmed that the Kmart store in the Hamptons in Bridgehampton, New York, would close permanently Oct. 20.

Only two Kmarts remain in the 50 states: the full-size store that’s closing in Bridgehampton and a smaller format store in Miami, which remains open. The Miami store is more akin to a convenience store, selling necessities in a much smaller square footage than a traditional big-box Kmart.

Kmart has been slowly closing stores for years since merging with Sears in 2005 under the management of hedge-fund CEO Eddie Lampert. Sears Holdings, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.

The last Kmart in Southern New England in Hyannis, Massachusetts, closed in early 2021. As of 2022, there were only three Kmarts remaining in the continental U.S.

Kmart does have several locations remaining open outside the 50 states in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
