João Fonseca definitively introduced himself to the world as the latest teen sensation in men’s tennis on Tuesday night, upsetting No. 9 seed Andrey Rublev 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Australian Open.

It was quite a debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the 18-year-old Brazilian, who’s ranked 112th and made it into the bracket at Melbourne Park by winning three matches in qualifying rounds.

The victory against 10-time Slam quarterfinalist Rublev, 27, took Fonseca’s current unbeaten run to 14 matches. That includes taking the title last month in Saudi Arabia at the Next Gen ATP Finals for top players under 21, and another trophy this month at a lower-tier Challenger event in Canberra.

Baseball: Former Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz, 37, died last week of an apparent drug overdose, according to a Phoenix police report obtained by the Baltimore Banner.

NHL: Canadiens player Emil Heineman likely will miss three to four weeks after being hit by a car while walking in downtown Salt Lake City a day before playing at the Utah Hockey Club. The 23-year-old Swedish forward didn’t show any signs of serious injuries. The Salt Lake City police and Utah Highway Patrol is looking into the accident.

Soccer: American star Christian Pulisic limped out of AC Milan’s 2-1 road win against match Como. The 26-year-old went down on the stroke of halftime after being caught on the ankle by defender Marc-Oliver Kempf. He immediately waved the medical staff over and appeared to be pointing to his left thigh. Pulisic had only just returned from injury after being out for nearly a month. ... Chelsea forward and Australia captain Sam Kerr appeared in court charged with racially aggravated harassment of a London police officer in Jan. 2023. She pleaded not guilty in March 2024. Kerr is one of the world’s top players.
