Police on Monday identified the 54-year-old woman attacked and killed by two stray pit bulls in West Baltimore on Friday night as Sheila Jones.

Officers responded around 8:51 p.m. to the 2000 block of North Pulaski Street to reports of a dog biting people. There they found two pit bulls attacking three people.

A 67-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening dog bites while Jones died from her injuries.

Melton Montgomery, who has lived in the area for nearly two months, said four pit bulls who were running around during the evening were likely owned by someone nearby since they had collars.

Two of the pit bulls attacked Jones and chased after officers, Montgomery said. Two of the officers shot one of the dogs, Baltimore Police said.

“I didn’t get bit, but I feel the harm because I am scared,” Montgomery said. “There were four of them [pit bulls] and two of them were chasing after the police. Police were running for their life.”

The dog who was shot was euthanized due to the severity of their injuries. The other dog remains in custody.

“The two were the only ones they caught, but there are two loose,” Montgomery said. “We saw four dogs. I was right here, and they were trying to kill.”

Baltimore Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether there were more dogs loose than reported.
