Nearly a month after dismantling rival Coppin State by 40, Morgan State on Saturday needed to put in overtime to construct one of the most memorable comebacks in school history.

Trailing by seven with 47 seconds left to play, the Bears scored eight of the final nine points in regulation, including Andre Horne's 3-pointer from the corner with one second left to force overtime, before pulling out a 74-72 win before an announced 2,887 on homecoming at Coppin.

“We needed a game like this,” Morgan coach Todd Bozeman said. “We needed a shot of confidence.”

“The great thing about it is we kept fighting hard,” Horne said. “Everybody thought the game was over, but we just stuck together.”

Morgan (8-20, 6-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) now has recorded three straight wins for the first time this season.

After entering the day 12th in the 13-team MEAC, the Bears would improve to at least 10th seed in the upcoming MEAC tournament, by ending their season with a win over Maryland-Eastern Shore Thursday after Hill Field House.

“I think we're getting there,” Bozeman said. “We've aiming to be peaking to be peaking in March and get ready for the tournament.”

Coppin (7-21, 5-10) meanwhile, now sits in the No. 12 seed heading into its finale Thursday at Delaware State. The Eagles still lead the all-time series 56-29.

This game looked to be Coppin's to lose.

Led by forward Terry Harris Jr. (20 points) and forward Josh Treadwell (17 points,) the Eagles built a 64-57 lead with 47 seconds left.

That's when things began to fall apart for Coppin.

Morgan first got a 3 from Rasean Simpson — his first of the game — then cut the lead to two when Simpson made a pair of free throws after getting fouled going for an offensive rebound.

With time winding down, Morgan was forced to foul with 8.6 seconds left, and Terry Harris made one of two, pushing Coppin's lead to three.

Horne (19 points) then brought the house down by nailing a 3-pointer from the corner with 1 second left, forcing overtime.

“He had a shot like that in a game earlier this year and he didn't make it,” Bozeman said. “Even in the first half, he was upset when he came out of the game. I kind of got into him a bit at halftime for being selfish. To his credit, he came out in the second half and got himself into the game.”

Up by a point in overtime, Morgan got another key 3-pointer from Horne to put it up 72-68, with 59.6 seconds left. Down by two following free throws, Coppin then had a chance to tie or take the lead, but couldn't.

First Treadwell's jumper rolled off the rim with 19 seconds left, then Keiph Shivers' 3-point attempt rimmed out with 9 seconds to play. The Eagles had one last shot following a pair of missed free throws, but Shivers' off-balance three fell short, brushing the front of the net.

“We're up 7 with a minute left to play, and we just didn't make enough plays,” Eagles coach Michael Grant said. “We allowed them to make some wide-open shots, we allowed them to get to the basket. We just didn't make enough plays down the stretch… and didn't get the stops we needed to close them out.”

Another bright spot for the Bears was the return of 6-4 senior Andrew Hampton who scored three points in his first action since suffering a fractured neck in a car accident during the pre-season.

Morgan had be 0-37 the past two seasons when trailing with 3 minutes left in regulation. It was their first overtime win since November 2013 against Marist.

Coppin fell to 0-6 in overtimes this season.

“Toward the end of the game, they decided to dig in,” Bozeman said. “It gave them an example of when you keep fighting through and things work out. It was big.”
