President Donald Trump is showing off the new gold card for those seeking a visa, saying “for $5 million, this could be yours.”
Trump revealed the card on Thursday to reporters aboard Air Force One as he started an informal press conference.
The card can be obtained by applicants for an immigrant investor program. It has a photo of the president on it with beams shining outward from his head. The Statue of Liberty is featured over Trump’s left shoulder, while the head of a bald eagle is below his right one.
On the right half of the card, nine stars partially surround the words “The Trump Card,” and his signature is at the bottom right. “5M” and “5,000,000” are in the corners of the card.
“Five-million. For $5 million, this could be yours,” Trump said, holding the card up. “That was the first of the cards. You see that?”
The president told the reporters the card will be ready for applicants in less than two weeks. Trump added he is the first buyer, even though he is a U.S. citizen.
In April, Secretary Howard Lutnick of the Department of Commerce said that 250,000 people were waiting for it. The visa program, officially called the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, allows applicants to obtain a Green Card if they make a “necessary investment” in a commercial enterprise within the U.S. and plan to create or preserve jobs for 10 American workers.
Lutnick said recipients of the gold card will be vetted, noting they are also going to bring “entrepreneurial spirit, capacity and growth to America.” A California congressman, Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, criticized the card after reports about it were published.
He used Google co-founder Sergey Brin; Sundar Pichai, the company’s CEO; and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella as examples of people who did not have millions of dollars when developing successful businesses.
“You don’t need to have $5 million in your bank account to build a successful company in America,” Khanna said.
