Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has a new backup.
Cooper Rush has agreed to a two-year, $6.2 million deal worth up to $12.2 million with Baltimore, a source with direct knowledge of the contract confirmed to The Baltimore Sun. It also includes $4.2 million guaranteed.
Rush spent most of his first eight seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the backup to Dak Prescott, and replaces 38-year-old Josh Johnson, who is a free agent after being Jackson’s backup each of the past two seasons.
The only other quarterback on Baltimore’s roster is Devin Leary, a sixth-round draft pick last year who struggled through training camp and in the preseason.
Rush, 31, brings plenty of experience and has proved to be a solid backup. He has appeared in 38 games (14 starts) with the Cowboys and went 9-5 in games he started.
Last season, he got his most extensive work, appearing in a dozen games for Dallas, including the final eight as a starter after Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury. Rush completed 60.7% of his passes and posted career highs in yards (1,844) and touchdown passes (12) while throwing five interceptions.
An undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan, Rush signed with the Cowboys in 2017 and spent three seasons as Prescott’s backup. When Mike McCarthy took over as coach in 2020, Dallas signed veteran Andy Dalton and released Rush before he later rejoined the Cowboys following a short stint with the New York Giants after Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
Rush remained Prescott’s backup for each of the past three seasons.
Though he has averaged just 6.4 yards per attempt over his career, Rush does have 20 career touchdown passes with 10 interceptions and has completed 60.7% of his passes for 3,463 yards.
