A company jointly owned by the Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health Systems will close this summer, eliminating over 1,000 jobs, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retaining Notification.
Broadway Services LLC, a Baltimore-based contract services company, serves the Maryland and Washington areas, including Hopkins’ Baltimore campuses. The firm provides security, parking services, janitorial, transportation and facility management.
In 2024, Hopkins reviewed the joint venture and determined many of its services “made sense” for Hopkins to oversee in-house, with others being operated by outside companies within the Baltimore area, a Hopkins spokesperson said in a statement to The Baltimore Sun. The decision was announced to all Broadway Services employees in October, providing them with eight months of notice.
“It is recognized that a transition like this can be challenging,” the company, which has served the Baltimore-Washington area for over 40 years, said in a newsletter published in January. “Both Johns Hopkins and Broadway Services are committed to providing support during this process. The goal is to help every Broadway Services’ employee make a smooth transition through placement within Johns Hopkins or a new service provider.”
As of March, 373 employees had already started or accepted roles within the university and health systems, while 211 had either started or accepted roles with outside vendors, according to the university.
“We are continuing to work with the remaining employees to create transition plans over the coming months,” the spokesperson said.
The job cuts and the ceasing of operations go into effect on June 30 and are not associated with any recent federal policy developments, according to the spokesperson.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers with 100 or more workers to provide at least 60 days of advance written notice of a mass layoff at a single site.
