Weisman Park in downtown Annapolis received a revamp recently with a landscaping restoration, sidewalk repair and two new lampposts sporting life-like arms holding umbrellas.
“Everyone benefits from this project, including those who listen to music performers during First Sunday Arts events or use the area to relax, eat lunch, read a book or connect to the parking garage,” Mayor Gavin Buckley said in a release Friday.
First Sunday Arts events, a street festival hosted by The Inner West Street Association, runs from May through November.Weisman Park, near the Visitors Center and the Gotts Court Parking Garage, is in an area that links downtown Annapolis to the Annapolis Arts District. The project was funded by a Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development grant.
The park’s lampposts feature an arm extending from the top that holds a black umbrella over a bench.
Each post has two lights: a traditional evening light and a secondary light under the umbrella that activates when someone sits beneath it. The lampposts, named “Luna and Sirius,” were designed and fabricated by Shaw’s Welding in Annapolis.
The Downtown Annapolis Partnership held community meetings to identify the park’s most pressing improvement needs. It worked with the City of Annapolis, Shaw’s Welding and Annapolis Landscape Architects to implement the upgrades.
New plants were added to rejuvenate the landscape and promote biodiversity, and the English ivy, an invasive species that had overrun several trees, was removed to protect the native plants. The park’s brick sidewalks were also repaired.
