A man and woman were killed after being hit by an Amtrak train south of Baltimore on Monday night.

Amtrak train 97 was traveling from New York City to Miami at approximately 5:50 p.m. when two individuals who were trespassing on the track came into contact with the train, according to Amtrak police. Both victims died from their injuries.

There were no reported injuries to the 161 passengers or crew onboard. Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, and railroad crossing incidents are the second leading cause.

“These incidents can affect everyone involved — those who are injured or die and their families, our train crews, and our passengers,” Amtrak police said in a statement. “They also serve as critical reminders about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.”

Amtrak works closely with Operation Lifesaver to #STOPTrackTragedies by emphasizing the obvious dangers of being on railroad property or disregarding warnings at rail crossings.
