DUNEDIN, Fla. — The Orioles were coming off a couple of very rough outings from their starting rotation, so Vance Worley's two hitless innings Friday had to be a breath of fresh Gulf Coast air even if the Toronto Blue Jays would eventually defeat the Orioles, 4-3, at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Worley, who's competing for either an unexpected opening in the starting rotation or a long relief-spot starter role, pitched to seven batters and allowed just a first-inning walk against a fairly representative Blue Jays lineup.

“The first inning I had to find it a little bit,” he said. “I was just trying to get the ball down in the zone. Knowing that lineup over there, they have some swingers. I was trying to mix it up and go in and out, and up and down was too down today. I was just glad I had the second inning I did.”

Even without Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion in the lineup, the Jays offense erupted against Orioles reliever Andrew Triggs, hitting three homers in the fourth inning.

Trumbo's first spring homer: Designated hitter-outfielder Mark Trumbo hit his first spring home run as an Oriole to tie the game briefly in the fourth inning. He lined a pitch from veteran pitcher Brad Penny over the right-center-field fence for the first Orioles run. Trumbo, who was in the lineup as the designated hitter for the first time after starting a couple of games in right field, also had a single in three at-bats.

Blue Jays hat trick: Jays catcher Russell Martin started the fourth-inning home run barrage with a slicing fly ball over the right-center-field fence. Two pitches later, Justin Smoak launched a tremendous, no-doubt moonshot in about the same direction. Left fielder Dalton Pompey completed the hat trick with a line drive over the right-field fence to knock Triggs out of the game.

Counterintuitive stat of the day: Triggs had given up just seven home runs in 236 minor league innings and none in 61 innings at Bowie last season.

Split squad today: The Orioles will play two exhibition games today. They'll play the Minnesota Twins in an afternoon game in Fort Myers, then play a 7:05 p.m. game at Ed Smith Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays. Tyler Wilson will start the road game, backed up by a bullpen that includes Odisamer Despaigne, Jason Garcia, Chris Lee, Parker Bridwell, Andy Oliver, Nick Additon, Donnie Hart, David Hess and Tanner Scott. Kevin Gausman will be the starter against the Rays, with Zach Britton, Darren O'Day, Mychal Givens, Todd Redmond, Dale Thayer, Jon Keller and Rich Rodriguez available in the bullpen.
