Cpl. Allen Marcus describes his role as a crisis response officer as the person who pursues the underlying issues behind routine police calls.

A four-year veteran of Anne Arundel County’s Crisis Response Team, Marcus’ work addressing those problems grabbed the attention of Crisis Intervention International, an advocacy organization that awarded him its International Crisis Officer of the Year award.

Marcus was selected from about 1,100 officers worldwide for the award.

Before his time with the crisis team, he worked for five years as an animal control officer and split time working out of the county Police Department’s Western District and as a school resource officer.

He said his current post requires officers to treat the cause of a crisis — not the symptoms. Helping those in stressful situations, “you’re digging deeper into what the problem is, where it’s coming from,” he said.
