McDonogh boys lacrosse simply appeared a bit sharper Tuesday against rival Boys’ Latin.
The No. 2 Eagles stayed focused and organized in back and their star players on attack provided clutch production.
For the three-time defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions, fresh off their first conference loss Friday at Spalding, Tuesday’s complete 10-6 win over the No. 3 Lakers was the kind of response they’ve come to expect after a setback.
Seniors Brendan Millon (three goals, three assists) and Bogue Hahn (three goals, one assist) keyed the offense with defenseman Michael Tan and goalie Aidan Seibel (seven saves) leading the strong defensive front.
McDonogh (9-4) improved to 5-1 in the MIAA, while Boys’ Latin (8-4) is now 4-2 in conference play.
“Friday was obviously disappointing — it wasn’t the standard we want to play to every time we take the field,” Millon said. “We had two great days of practice in preparation, guys were super focused and no matter what happens with our team, we have a foundation of love and that’s what keeps up going.”
Hahn provided two momentum-swinging goals in the game, both coming in the final seconds of quarters.
With an evenly played first quarter tied at 3, he scored with eight seconds left to give the Eagles the lead for good.
It turned out to be the start of five straight goals — the Eagles’ defense keeping the Lakers scoreless for a 22-plus minute stretch — to build a 8-3 advantage past the midway point of the third quarter.
After the Lakers finally got back on track with three straight rapid-fire goals to make it 8-6, Hahn again proved momentum wrecker with his third goal of the game coming with 12 seconds left in the third.
“A massive momentum goal,” McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner said. “They had cut it to two, so getting that for a three-goal cushion going into the fourth quarter was just a really huge lift for us.”
There would be no suspense to the fourth quarter, the Eagles simply didn’t allow it. Millon tallied his third goal with 8:08 left and that would be the only scoring.
The Eagles, playing without injured faceoff specialist Ciaran Sweeney, expected to play a little extra at the defensive end and responded favorably. They blanked the Lakers in the second and fourth quarters, no easy task against a quality attack.
Tan was given the responsibility of covering Lakers’ standout attackman Matt Higgins (three goals, one assist) and held his own in many of the game’s important stretches.
“He’s really fast and skilled and the type of player I love going up against because I think I’m fast, too, and can match up with him. So I was confident, knew my teammates had my back and was ready to go,” Tan said.
For the Lakers, Lincoln Herring had two goals to go with Higgins’ effort on offense, while Caden Hoffman had a strong game at the X and goalie Garrett Held made six saves.
With no conference games scheduled for Good Friday, both teams return to action next week.
Boys’ Latin travels to Severn next Tuesday with game time set for 4:15 p.m. McDonogh has a bye next Tuesday and will host Mount Saint Joseph at 4:30 p.m. on April 25.
